Dragon's Back Race® 2019 - Race Director's Report

The 2019 Berghaus Dragon’s Back Race® is over and what an incredible week it was for all involved. The 5th edition of this legendary race further cemented it's reputation as a world-class event in the mountain running and outdoor community. Day 5: Galen Reynolds and Lisa Watson win the 2019 Dragon's Back Race

Canadian Galen Reynolds and Brit Lisa Watson ran to convincing wins in the 2019 Dragon’s Back Race. Galen’s time of 37:48:06 is a race record, beating Marcus Scotney’s 2017 win by almost 10 minutes.

Lisa was also the fastest female on the final day of the gruelling 315km multi-stage race, including 15,500m vertical gain, from the north to the south of Wales.

Day 5: Finishing day joy - and tears - for 2019 Dragons

More warm weather carried the 2019 Berghaus Dragon’s Back Race runners to the finish line in Llandeilo today. The final day took the runners into the Brecon Beacons National Park with a few stings in the Dragon’s tail.

From tranquil rural landscapes to the scarp of The Black Mountain and many of the highest summits of south Wales, there were plenty of ups and downs in the 63km route with a total ascent of 2,200m.

Day 4: Runners smile, laugh and chat through the pain

Blisters on blisters, sore knees, hips, shins and ankles, miles of colourful kinesiology used to strap up ailments and sunburn lines that look sore and raw. Yet, despite the obvious aches, pains, niggles and agonies of the 264 runners still in the 2019 Berghaus Dragon’s Back, the mood on day four was very upbeat.
