6 Route Highlights on the Montane Dragon’s Back Race®

One of the best things about the iconic Montane Dragon’s Back Race® is undoubtedly the route. The journey down the mountainous spine of Wales takes you to some pretty special places. Here we break down some of our favourite route highlights on each day.

Day 1 – Crib Goch

Of course we couldn’t not mention the famous Crib Goch. Participants run over this awe-inspiring ridge on the first day. An exposed arête with some precipitous drops either side, many participants will find themselves with wobbly knees at the prospect of tackling this rocky challenge. However, the views of Snowdonia, and the huge relief and achievement at the other side are more than worth it.

Day 2 – Cnicht

Cnicht is known colloquially as the Welsh Matterhorn, and from certain angles, you can see why. The pointy, pyramid shape is certainly reminiscent of its alpine counterpart. Although at only 689m it’s not the tallest mountain the participants have to conquer , it still presents its challenges, particularly the steep descent from the top. Many past participants have opted for the classic bum slide on this part of the route.

Day 3 – Cadair Idris

The mighty Cadair Idris is the highlight of Day 3. Occurring early on in the day, the climb is definitely a wake up call for runners with already tired legs. The views from the top and the fun descent are definitely worth the struggle to get there though. There is, however, another highlight of Day 3 – the chance to go to the supermarket and load up on snacks!

Day 4 – Elan Valley

The remote hills of the Elan Valley are the highlight of Day 4. The grassier terrain is a real contrast to the rocky landscapes of the first few days. However, though there’s less elevation on this day, it’s no less tough – the dragons still have a long way to travel.

Day 5 – Pen Y Fan

On Day 5, the Dragons will cross the famous Brecon Beacons, including the highest mountain in South Wales, Pen y Fan. On a good day, runners will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Bristol Channel, Gower Peninsula and Cambrian Mountains. However, it's a challenging journey to get there, as the route traverses the main peaks of the Brecon Beacons.

Day 6 – Cardiff Castle

This is it! After 6 days of gruelling climbing and tricky descents, our successful dragons will have the most spectacular finish to their journey as they arrive in Cardiff Castle. The iconic building is certainly a fitting setting for the finish of such an epic adventure. Our Dragons will be relieved to be met by family and friends here, as they celebrate their awesome achievement.
