2017 Entries are open - event capacity and entry statistics

Entries for the 2017 Berghaus Dragon’s Back Race™ opened to great anticipation yesterday, Monday 9th May. In the first 60 minutes, 125 entries were sold; a rate of over two per minute. The entry total stood at 221 competitors after the first 24 hours of entries opening.

Whilst the organisers, Ourea Events, are anticipating a ca. 200 capacity event, there is a deliberately generous overspill on entry numbers in a bid to combat the significant drop-out rate expected over the next 12 months ahead of the race start on May 22nd 2017. It would be heart-breaking for both competitors and organisers alike if not all the spaces were taken. Owing to the tough nature of the Berghaus Dragon’s Back Race™, a waiting list operating at short-notice would be impractical with most competitors preparing both physically and mentally up to a year or more in advance. Therefore, the entries will be actually be closed at nearer 300 entries and no waiting list will operate after this point.

An inspiring range of 21 nationalities have entered so far of which the top six are: British (166), American (13), Belgian (5), Swiss (4), Irish (4), and Chinese (4). The youngest competitor thus far is 25 years of age, and the oldest 68.

Shane Ohly, race director, said “It’s fabulous to see so many entries and from such a wide range of nationalities, all keen to take on the toughest 5-day mountain running race in the world. We can’t wait to be back in Wales for the 2017 event”.
