Father & son finishers

Among the finishers of the Berghaus Dragon’s Back race at Cerreg Cennen Castle were the father and son pairing of Glenn and Huw Davies, certainly the first father and son pair to finish the race, with Huw the youngest ever finisher too.

He’s 22 and Glenn is “59 and  half” and the pair have been running mountain marathons since Huw was 18. “I think it was Huw who first mentioned this,” he said, “and we decided to give it a go. It’s the first run of this scale we’ve done, and the first we’ve ever really been close to pulling out of.  We were in the tent talking before day 3 and both said we were very, very tired, and for a moment we considered not getting of our sleeping bags. We survived day 3 and then felt the next 2 days were just like another mountain marathon and we could manage it.

“Today we got very close to being too cold as well. The weather threw everything at us today. Freezing temperatures, gales, rain and then lovely sunshine to finish!

“Huw did all the navigation for the race and didn’t go wrong. He’s our eyes on the hill as I wear glasses now and they are a real nuisance when trying to nav, especially in bad weather.”

Those young eyes were full of tears at the finish line and an emotional Huw said how proud of his dad he was ... though he did later say he might not be up for ‘dragging him round again in two years time’.

With all their family working there were no supporters there to greet them, but they got a rousing cheer from everyone on the finish line and claimed their own unique place in the history of the Dragon’s Back Race.
