Debunking the myths of the Dragon’s Back Race®

The Montane Dragon’s Back Race® is a legendary race. And, like all legends, there are also some myths surrounding it. We’ve debunked some of the biggest myths here:

The myth:

You need to be an expert at navigation

Debunked:

You don’t need to be a whizz with a map and compass. We provide GPX files for participants to download to their GPS device, and many participants get round using only this. We do still recommend getting familiar with your event map though, as it also contains information about cut off times which will be helpful.

If you’ve never done any navigation, try plotting a route on your device and practise following it. If you can recce a few sections of the route, this will allow you to become more familiar with the terrain too.

As long as you feel comfortable following the route on a GPX device, you will be more than able to find your way on the Dragon’s Back Race®.

The myth:

The Dragon’s Back Race® is only for those with a good head for heights

Debunked:

If you’re fixating on photos of lofty ridges, don’t let that put you off! Crib Goch only makes up a very small section of the route on Day 1, and many find it is less scary than the pictures make it seem. After all, hundreds of tourists cross the ridge every day. Provided you can make sensible decisions in the mountains you will be fine!

If you’re still nervous, getting out to recce it is the best way of putting those nerves to rest. After all, it would be a shame to miss out on such an epic adventure because of one small section. And think of the achievement when you finally get across!

The myth:

You need a whole year to prepare for the Dragon’s Back Race

Debunked:

If you’re already an experienced runner with a good base level of fitness and endurance, there’s no reason why you can’t train for the Dragon’s Back Race in a few months. You just need a good, dedicated training block. Plus, the Hatchling is a great option if you want to give it a go, but aren’t sure if you’re quite ready for the full 380km yet.

Prioritise getting out for some long efforts on similar terrain, and if time and location allow, set aside a few weekends for recceing the route. Just make sure you save enough time for a taper!

The myth:

You need to be an elite runner to do the Dragon’s Back Race

Debunked:

This definitely isn’t true! Very few people who do the Montane Dragon’s Back Race are elite runners – the vast majority of participants are ‘regular’ people with a passion for running, who wouldn’t be anywhere near the front of the field in most trail races.

Anyone who has the drive and determination can do the Montane Dragon’s Back Race with the right training. Many people who have completed the Montane Dragon’s Back Race are ‘ordinary’ runners who once never even dreamed that doing something like the Dragon’s Back Race would be possible.
