Six reasons why six days are better than five

1. Finish at Cardiff Castle

As you journey down the mountainous spine of Wales, know that there will be something very exciting to look forward to at the end of the route. Run out of the hills and into the city to finish this epic adventure inside the walls of Cardiff Castle - a spectacular and fitting finish in the capital of Wales. This is the true ‘Dragon’s Back’, from Conwy Castle in the north to Cardiff Castle in the south, traversing every mountain range in between. Enjoy a special dinner on the final evening inside the castle walls where all finishers will be presented with their mini Dragon trophy. A great way to celebrate with family, friends and your fellow Dragon slayers!

2. See more of the Brecon Beacons National Park

Our new route will traverse the stunning Brecon Beacons National Park much more extensively; from the highest point on The Black Mountain in the west of the park to the highest summit of South Wales - Pen y Fan (886m) - in the central Brecon Beacons. Day five is now a monstrous 70km and promises to be an awesome day of mountain running continuing the wild, remote, adventurous ethos of the event. Who wouldn’t want to spend another day exploring this beautiful country?

3. More opportunities to make lifelong friendships

So often previous participants say that the camaraderie they share with their fellow Dragon slayers is what makes the week so special and memorable. Running with others, sharing the highs and the lows, makes the miles fly by and this support is the key to a successful event completion for many. Imagine one more day to enjoy more Welsh running with some awesome new friends? Who could say no to that!?

4. More time with our awesome event team

Many previous participants talk about how supportive, friendly and encouraging our event team are - and it’s true! Six days means more time with a whole bunch of people who are just as enthusiastic, passionate and excited about the event as you are. Many are runners themselves who simply want to give back to the community and help others achieve their goals. We have lots of regular volunteers who come back year after year but let’s not forget, it’s pretty hard work too with lots of late nights and early mornings, not to mention moving the entire event campsite through Wales (including 55x 8-man tents!).

5. Experience another night in the wild

Enjoy another night in the wild at our overnight camp with the addition of the sixth day. Switch off, relax and let us look after all of the logistics so that you can focus on the running. We will transport your luggage, pitch the tents, cook you up some lovely veggie food and one of our event team will even take you and your overnight dry bag to your tent upon your arrival into camp. Sounds like the perfect running holiday, right?

6. More chance to soak up some Welsh sunshine!

We have been lucky enough to enjoy plenty of sunshine on the Dragon’s Back Race over the years, so don’t forget your sun cream and running cap as you head off for that new day six! Our route is carefully put together by our experienced course planning team to ensure that you have the best experience and enjoy all of those beautiful and hidden corners of Wales.
